Ragtime was a form of American popular music that had its heyday in the period around 1900; its defining characteristic was 'ragged' or
syncopated rhythms against a steady beat. One of its most successfuI exponents was Scott ]oplin (1867/68-1917), the son of a former slivi, who
composed a ragtime opera and many rags and other pieces for piano. This is a free adaptation of the fust two stains of loplin's peacherine Rag,
published in St Louis, Missouri in 1901. (Several of his pieces are named after fruits or flowers, and a peacherine is a cross bin"e"o a peach and a
nectarine.) The suggested metronome marking reflects the original tempo direction 'Not too fast', and Joplin's frequently repeated injunction: 'It
is never right to play "rag-time" fast.' For the exam, play the dal segno but none of the other repeats.
