Nyonya Needlework from Penang
The needlework of the Peranakan Chinese of Penang is highly regarded for its detail and craftsmanship.
Whereas their metallic thread embroidery is similar in subject matter and style to that of other Peranakan Chinese communities, distinct characteristics of their beadwork often set it apart from works from other parts of the Straits Settlements and Sumatra.
Through an examination of historical examples of needlework, this paper considers the artistic links between these regions and its relationship with the constitution of local Peranakan Chinese identities.
