Most of the HR decisions that involve finance are made by the corporate head office. We are
just following their decisions (HRM12, Resort D).
In Resort E, only an HR assistant is based in the resort. The HR assistant does
not have any say in the decision making at the resort level. HR functions
are coordinated by a manager located in the Male´ office, who is also responsible
for centrally coordinating HR functions of all the resorts operating in the Maldives
that belong to the parent company. Thus, there is a greater HR role for line managers
in the resort.
The HR manager and HR director in Resort F and G, respectively, are members of
their resorts’ MTs. Their GMs have high expectations of the HR departments. As the
GM of Resort F described:
As I see it, the HR department is one of the most complex and vital roles in the organization
because it’s their job to act as a go-between [for the] team [employees] and management. It’s
their job to ensure that all statutory requirements are met in terms of how we run our
business and in terms of the labour law of the country in which it exists. It’s their job also to
monitor the general and overall happiness and well-being of the team and to propose plans
that we can put in place and prove that [we can] handle any unfortunate situations which may
arise in a pragmatic and an unbiased way. And I demand very much from my human
resources team. And they are under a lot of pressure (SNM20, Resort F).
