Tragic events can bring out the best or worst in the news media, from the sensitive to the sensationalistic. That invites a basic question: What is the role of journalism in covering tragedy? Should journalists be restricted to stating the facts, or should they play a role in understanding or ever healing? If the latter, would this supplemental responsibility enhance or compromise the ability to report accurately or impartially?
