Caffeine is probably the pharmacologically active substance most used in the world. Thus, caffeine consumption and human health effects are important issues for the scientific community, as well as for the general population.
This article presents an overview of caffeine consumption in western countries, namely through traditional beverages, like coffee, tea, and soft drinks, as well as through energy drinks. A brief description of caffeine health effects is also presented.
Finally, some opinions about the role of risk communication authorities on the divulgation of the potential health risks of caffeine consumption by energy drinks, especially when associated with alcohol and/or physical activity, is discussed.
