A muscle strengthening
program increased treadmill exercise
performance but to a lesser extent than treadmill
walking exercise. Strength training improved walking
speed and stair-climbing ability but no other
aspects of physical functioning as assessed by the
PAR, MOS, or Vitalog. Whether longer periods of
strength training would be more effective was not
answered by this study. Because strength training
required intensive use of resources (one physical
therapist for every two patients for each training
session), a 24-week strength training program was
not included in the original design.
