The concern that high reticulocytosis in blood samples from neo- nates may give rise to false negative diagnosis for G-6-PD deficiency was not borne out in this study, indicating that despite the elevated levels of the enzyme in reticulocytes [8–10], the reduced enzymatic ac- tivities of G-6-PD variants present in our study group cannot be com- pensated by the elevated reticulocytosis status. However, in G-6-PD- normal blood samples, reticulocyte numbers did perturb measurements of G-6-PD activity, but it is unlikely that a G-6-PD-deficient condition is produced when reticulocyte counts return to normal level in later stages
