Create Family Albums An all about My Family book can contain pictures of individual family members or of things the family does together (plays ball, eats dinner, watches TV). You can include holidays the family shares and places the family goes together (the supermarket, a restaurant, the beach). Children may have their own ideas about who to include-some may include pets, cousins, grandparents, and even “aunties” and “uncles” who are not literally relatives. Others may only include the people who live in their house, or include just their parents, siblings, and themselves. Children can bring in real photographs, draw pictures themselves, or cut pictures from magazines to represent their families’ favorite activities and places. Help children write or dictate captions for their pictures and share their books with their friends.
Bring Families around the World Collect pictures and books that show families from different cultures and different parts of the world. Choose pictures that show ordinary events, such as eating, sleeping, taking children to school, styling hair, washing clothes, and reading together. Have the children identify similarities and differences among the picture. Showing two people carrying food. The children might notice the differences in foods, containers, and clothing. If you use cutouts from calendars and magazines, the children can make books or bulletin board displays showing how families are alike and different.
