Birdseye Maple
Species: Hard Rock Maple, Sugar Maple
Latin name: Acer saccharum
Density: ca. 735 kg/m³
Description:
Sugar maple is well known not only to guitar lovers. Its leaf is a national symbol of Canada, and the tree yields a great-tasting maple syrup. The wood is equally valuable - extremely hard, tough and resilient, therefore it is commonly used to build necks and fingerboards of guitars and basses, and sometimes also for body tops.
Sugar Maple has a very bright sound with long sustain and a very clear attack. One of the most valued variation of this wood is called Bird's eye maple. In addition to its interesting texture it is also exceptionally hard and rigid. Hardness and intriguig pattern of wood veins is also not without influence on tonal character of such necks. They are characterized by a slightly smaller share of the upper highs and a slightly softer attack.
