Nouns can be used in many kinds of phrases: noun phrases, verb phrases, adjectival phrases, adverbial phrases, and prepositional phrases. They can serve a function of a head, a modifier, and an object. The nature of the structure of each type of phrases will be fully discussed in chapter 6. Therefore, in this chapter, only the structures which involve the use of nouns are presented. See the list of the functions of nouns in different kinds of phrases below.
