Among 300 woman with septic abortions at Parkland Hospital, one fourth had a positive blood culture result. The organisms were predominantly anaerobic bacteria and coliforms, but others, including Haemophilus influenza, Campylobacter jejuni, and group A streptococcus, also were noted. Treatment of infection includes prompt intravenous administration of broad-spectrum antimicrobials followed by evacuation of the products of conception. It sepsis and shock supervene, then supportive caer is essential, as discussed in Chapter 42. Septic abortion also may lead to disseminated intravascular coagulopathy.
