It all depends upon the extent to which you are independent. If, like a retired person, there is no one to tell you what to do, you run your day. If you need work for a living, the bulk of your day's activity is determined by the requirements of your job. Working activity necessarily limits the time that you have for non-working activities - grocery shopping, home chores, kid care, etc.. So you need to adopt routines for those also. Thus is the day of a working person run by external circumstances.
