If that sounds pretentiously conceptual, that’s far off the mark. A large part of Watanabe’s attraction is the fact that he’s so grounded in serving the realities of how normal women dress to get around daily city life. Nearly all his models wore black leggings or narrow pants and flat, pointy brogues. On top, sequenced in amongst the vast varieties of 3-D effects in matte and shine, were amalgams of capes, puffers, biker jackets, and duffel coats. Watanabe never lets himself meander off into art for art’s sake. He makes practical things to keep people warm in winter—great patch-worked cable-knit sweaters and cardigans included.
