Aquaculture production, meanwhile, has surged, particularly during the past 10±15 years. Farmed fish supplies totalled 29 Mt in 1997, compared with 10 Mt a decade ago. Such growth helps to
explain current patterns in ocean ®sh capture; between 1986 and 1997, 4 of the top 5, and 8 of the top 20 capture species were used in feed production for the aquaculture and livestock industries8.
