Most bird nests serve not only as shelters but also as places to hatch and rear the young. Some catepillars spin cocoons tightly around themselves as places to stay while they are going through their final stage of growth. As soon as they emerge as moths or butterflies, they destroy the cocoons. Each night a chimpanzee in the wild builds a new nest of leaves and branches as a soft place to sleep.
A spider’s web may be both a nest and a means of trapping insects for food. One function of a squirrel’s nest is the storage of nuts.
