2.1. Shellfish
In April 1999, specimens of the crab Telmessus
acutidens, mussel Mytylus galloprovincialis, short-necked
clam Tapes japonica, sea urchin Strongylocentrotus nudus,
oyster Crassostrea gigas, scallop Chlamys farreri nipponensis,
and ascidian Halocynthia roretzi were collected at
Onahama in Japan by scuba diving. The highest concentration
of Alexandrium spp. during our collection in 1999
reached to 2.4 £ 103 cells/l. The crabs and the mussels were
collected again in 2000 at the same point, though the
concentration of Alexandrium spp. reached only 10 cells/l.
The collected shellfishes were stored below 220 8C until
sample preparation.
