In summary, these results suggest that the application of 1-MCP prior to CA storage and again after 4 months of storage, as multiple 1-MCP treatments, may have varying effects on storage-related disorder development in apple, such as external CO2 injury and core browning. All typical effects of 1-MCP treatments were observed throughout the various storage regimes, with slight improvement to firmness retention after 7 d at RT in ‘McIntosh’ and late harvested ‘Empire’ subjected to multiple 1-MCP treatments. Nonetheless, these benefits to fruit quality have to be considered in relation to storage-disorder susceptibility associated with a second 1-MCP treatment on apples that have been maintained for 4 months in CA.
