While bees unquestionably communicate with each other, the doubt remains whether this process resembles communication through human language. Though information is indeed being transferred from one bee to others, the dance only tells the bees where to find honey. It is restricted in scope to the location of objects, a language consisting only of map references. Unusual locations or weather conditions cannot be dealt with, let alone topics such as the reason why Arsenal were beaten by West Ham last week. Human language, however, can in principle be used to talk about anything, whether real or imaginary. It is not limited to certain topics or ideas but is free to include any message at all. In addition, it has many functions other than communication of ideas, as was seen in Chapter Seven.
