According to the previous considerations, the two capital are
therefore compared disregarding the biodiversity contribution to
avoid inconsistency in the comparison. In light of this, the regional
human-made capital (6.29E + 24 seJ) is about 11 times higher than
the natural capital (5.69E + 23 seJ), due to the high exploitation of
local and mainly imported natural resources to generate it. The
construction of buildings, roads, rails, and machineries requires a high
quantity of fossil fuels and raw materials from nature; by cumulatively
accounting for all the transformations needed to obtain a product,
emergy values well represent and quantify the convergence and utilization
of material and energy flows.
