involves sucrose-phosphate synthase (SPS), which catalyzes the
conversion of UDP-glucose and fructose-6-phosphate into sucrose-6-phosphate,
and sucrose-phosphatase (SPP), which converts
sucrose-6-phosphate into sucrose. Sucrose synthase (SUSY)
can synthesize sucrose as well, by catalyzing the conversion of
UDP-glucose and fructose into sucrose. However, SUSY is mostly
present in sink tissues where it is part of sucrose utilization pathways.
Newly synthesized sucrose is transported to other tissues,
stored in the vacuole or metabolized. Sucrose is transported
through the phloem, from source, where sucrose is synthesized,
to sink, where sucrose is stored or utilized
