Information design
There is one important facet to bear in mind above all else when considering typography for information design, which is functionality. Because we usually experience information else, we tend not to see this as design. It can thus become the most invisible of typographic treatments.
Readability and legibility are very important considerations. Within diagrams, for example, the text must not overpower the appearance of the visualizer information.
Although sans serif types may give a 'neutral' aesthetic tone compared to many serif typefaces, this doesn't mean they are more or less legible and so exclusively fit for use in information design. The design of 'way finding' and informational signage requires clarity to function. The relationship of typography and space in these applications can vary considerably from the small signage panel to grand architectural applications. Consistency of style (perhaps of size, too and the contrast of typography in relation to background will be important in establishing a clear and effective system.
