The current study investigated changes in levels of moral disengagement
in relation to changes in bullying behavior in order to explore whether
crystallization and escalation of moral disengagement are found among children
involved in school bullying. Overall, no significant changes in moral
disengagement occurred between the two time points indicating that, in general,
the 12- to 14-year-old adolescents in this study did not show significant
changes in the tendency to morally disengage. In comparison, in their sample
of 14- to 20-year olds, Paciello et al. (2008) found that moral disengagement
declined significantly from the age of 14, especially from 14 to 16 years. The
findings of the present study thus contributed to the investigation of developmental
aspects of moral disengagement by suggesting that, in general,
moral disengagement neither increases nor decreases significantly among
adolescents younger than age 14.
