Before visiting the supplier for cost estimation you should…
The process suggested for the whole cost estimation exercise is therefore suggested:
1. Choose supplier and part for cost estimation
2. Send out information to be filled out by supplier
3. Perform a supplier visit together with Run@Rate if it has not already been done
4. Analyze gathered information
5. Book new meeting for completion of data retrieval or negotiations depending on result
Request information
Information about the supplier and the process should be assembled before the visit in as great an extent as the buyer believes the supplier can handle in regards to how much they actually know, and how much information one can ask for without tiring the supplier out even before the visit. The purpose of getting information before the visit is to be able to analyse the data beforehand so that problem areas might be identified and also so that during the visit control questions can be asked to different persons in order to validate information as to track accuracy in statements given by the supplier.
At the least financial information is to be requested beforehand and depending on how big of a request the buyer thinks the supplier can handle suggestions on data to request is given last in this document under heading “Request information from supplier form”.
Organization of the visit
Inform the supplier on how you would like the meeting to progress, an example for the whole cost estimation process:
1. Company presentation in the meeting room
2. Reviewing process layout for the investigated part along with intended process according to PPAP
3. Review current offer of the supplier
4. Walking the flow in the plant
5. Continued discussions in the office
