because of the time differences between the U.S. and japan, I usually email instead of calling. I guess it works OK. sometime,though, I send an email and don't get any response for several days. Then I don't know if my message didn't get though . or if the other person was just busy, or what the problem is. I've also noticed that when I send an email with several question, I sometime get an answer to only some of the questions. Our staff in japan has pretty English skills, so I don't know what the problem is. But it means I have to send some of my questions again, and that wastes time.
I think Americans are less formal with email than japanese, at least at work. We sometimes send jokes or photos by email, but I rarely receive anything like that form the japan office. I know we send things that aren't really related to work, but I like that-it makes my job less stressful
