The suitability of various types of biomass for fermentative
processing to hydrogen depends on their chemical composition
(Urbaniec and Grabarczyk, 2009). Sucrose-containing vegetable
material can easily be transformed into fermentable feedstock
while for starchy biomass or lignocellulosic materials appropriate
pretreatment processes are required (Panagiotopoulos et al., 2009).
It is also known that protein content in the biomass correlates
inversely with the hydrogen yield of dark fermentation (Trably,
2012).
