Artistic Inspiration
The way in which Winogrand harnessed his talents is thanks to his inspirations.
These inspirations include Walker Evans and Robert Frank. Walker Evans, who published “American Photographs”, influenced Winogrand through his documentation of life’s harsh and often grueling moments. Robert Frank, who published “The Americans”, influenced Winogrand through his isolated portrayal of the average citizen and society in post-war America. Both of these artists gave viewers a look at America in a way which was original and unique, and that is the core principle which helped to spark the fire within Garry Winogrand.
