Ivan Lansberg has discussed a darker possibility—that of a founder's negative imprint on the organizational culture.? Successful business founders may develop an unhealthy narcissism, or exaggerated sense of self-importance. Such individuals occasionally develop a craving for attention, a fixation with success and public recognirion, and a lack of empathy for others. Unfortunately, these attitudes can harm the business by creating a general feeling of superiority and a sense of complacency. While contributions of founders deserve proper acknowledgment, such extremes must be avoided.
