Vicky Karkou from Scotland was part of a team that developed, piloted and evaluated a
program that aimed to promote the mental health of young people through dance and the other arts (Karkou & Glasman, 2004). Therapeutic principles from dance movement therapy and other arts therapies were used as a means of educating teaching staff about mental health issues, risks and the sensitive use of the arts. School-based interventions for young people with a collaborative character were introduced. Qualitative and quantitative findings from the program evaluation were presented, and future plans were discussed. Particular emphasis was placed upon the value of such programs as groundwork for introducing typical dance/movement practice in schools.
