3.3. Simulated gastrointestinal survival of LAB: transit tolerance
LAB isolates need to be equipped to withstand the effect of
about 2.5 l gastric juice and 1 l bile secreted daily into the human
digestive tract (Argyri et al., 2013). Viability of SB71 in gastric juice
reduced significantly after 3 h (P < 0.05) while intestinal juice
further reduced its viability between 3 and 24 h (P < 0.001). Similar
kind of drop in survival was observed for SB73 (Fig. 3). While
viability of SB93 was unaffected in gastric juice, it was significantly
reduced in intestinal juice (P < 0.001) between 6 and 24 h (Fig. 3).
Percentage survival of SB93 after incubation in intestinal juice for
24 h was significantly higher (P < 0.001) than the other two isolates
(Fig. 3)
