3.3. Option 3 – pumped storage combined with battery
3.3.1. System schematic and working principle
In Option 3, renewables powered seawater pumped storage
scheme is proposed for this island. As shown in Fig. 2, the pumped
storage system, which is isolated from the utility-grid system, is
powered by an optimized hybrid solar and wind system (to simplify
the document and sizing procedure, in this study, the PV panel
is considered as the sole renewable source). This proposed
system is regulated by a control center, including inverters, transformers,
and regulators to manage the whole microgrid system.
Another possible benefit is that it can be fully integrated with
the local natural conditions by using seawater in the lower reservoir
and combining the streams and rain water in the upper reservoir,
which can make good use of a renewable solar, wind and
hydro combination, also allow renewables to remain renewable.
The work principle of the micro off-grid PV system with
pumped storage would be a little more complicated than the conventional
PHS due to the intermittent characteristic of PV output.
Such a storage system elevates water to a higher storage reservoir
using pumps when renewables are available and larger than the
demand. The stored water is then allowed to flow back to the lower
reservoir enabling discharge of electricity through a turbine/generator
during periods of high electrical demand or lower renewable
energy resource
