Nonetheless, the impact of the car has become severe at many tourism destinations.
As a result, transport management measures are now being adopted to solve these
problems and balance the needs of local community traffic with those of visitors.
Implementation of these measures can be difficult, as motorists are often resistant to
restrictions. We seem able to accept restrictions on motoring for business or everyday
domestic travel, but are rather less willing to comply when we are ‘at leisure’.
Even so, our increasing desire for a quality experience at destinations will inevitably
lead to the demand that leisure traffic is also ‘managed’.
