To make matters worse, the recent economic downturn hit HHI especially hard, as world trading and shipping plummeted. Orders for new ships in 2009 plunged to 7.9 million compensation gross tons (CGT, a measurement of vessel size), down from 150 million CGT the previous year. In this economic environment, Hyundai Heavy was looking new ways to reduce expenses and streamline production.
