catheters have been modified significantly over a period. The initial vascular access methods for hemodialysis included either a single lumen catheter that required an intermittent flow device or 2 separate catheters. The design has gradually evolved to the present-day catheters that have 2 lumens coaxially arranged in a single catheter with physically separated lumens for arterial and venous flow.5 They are mostly made from polyurethane or polyvinyl. There are conflicting reports on what is a safe duration for the use of these catheters, and recommendations vary from 1 to few weeks (NKF recommends ,1 week and never .3 weeks). However, there are reports from certain parts of the world of much longer use and indeed using them for long-term dialysis also.
