The commercial-sized, submersible abalone cage grow-out system is a modular box structure as shown in Fig. 1 . The submersible abalone cage examined in this study can be moved vertically within the water column by adjusting weight and buoyancy forces. It is raised to the surface by injecting compressed air into ballast tanks. Once at the surface, the modules can be inspected, cleaned and the animals fed. When the husbandry operations are completed, air is released from the ballast tanks and the structure is submerged for approximately 7–10 days. The submergence mechanism details are provided in Kim et al. (2010, 2011, 2012, 2014a).
