Mr. Easton agreed with this story by admitting that he was the marshal/officer.
Miss Fairchild went on disclosing her love for Easton. She said she loved to see Easton back in Washington where she lived unmarried.
See that the lady would shortly propose marriage and that would bring more troubles, the glum faced marshal takes Easton to the smoker room in the coach/compartment.
When the two were gone, a passenger who had been listening to the conversation told his companion that the glum faced man was really a good man.
The companion didn’t understand that because he was of the opinion that Mr. Easton was supposed to be the good one.
The first passenger laughed. He said that the glum faced man was the real Marshal because officers wear the hand cuff on their left hand.
It was true. Mr. Easton’s right hand that was hand-cuffed!
