Educators in architecture recognize the need of an integrated learning environment
to bridge die existing gap between non-studio courses and design studios. Such integration
requires the systematic processing of increasing quantities of design information. The
purpose of this study is to develop a computer assisted instruction (CAT) system for design
studio through information communication and to investigate the system's capability as an
integrative tool, a delivery tool, and an instructional tool.
Using an intranet, the CAI system provided design students with CAI lessons on
architectural concepts as a supplement to their design project. Evaluation of the CAI system
utilized students’ scores of concept acquisition tests, their responses to questionnaire
surveys conducted during and after the design project, and observations of the researcher.
The survey questionnaires involved aspects of the CAI lesson in concept learning and the
contribution of the lesson to the design projects. The students' individual data and group
data from the tests and surveys were collected and analyzed. The results of the data analysis
indicate that the CAI system can perform as an integrative learning tool for acquisition of
design knowledge in the design studio. The results also indicate the important role of using
examples in learning design concepts, the need for creating rich interactions with the
examples, and the need for using different appropriate instructional methods for different
levels of concept study.
The findings of this study provide context-bound information for organizing,
presenting, and delivering design information and creating interactions with the information
for transm itting design knowledge. The findings also suggest approaches that may be used
and attitudes toward information technology in the development of computer-based
instructional information systems in architectural education and recommend potential uses
for the concept of a CAI system to extend beyond the design studio into other areas in the
profession of architecture.
