A number of asexual blood stage antigens of Plasmodium vivax have been identified and some of them have been considered to be potential vaccine candidates. Most of the vaccine candidate proteins have significant or potential roles during erythrocyte invasion by malarial merozoites. These include Duffy binding protein, merozoite surface protein 1, apical membrane antigen-1, reticulocyte binding proteins 1 and 2, merozoite surface proteins 3α,3β,3γ and merozoite surface proteins 4 and 5.
