exclusively from 3337 floating nurseries moored within the
farming areas located inside the estuaries of Vigo, Pontevedra,
Arousa, Muros-Noia and Ares-Betanzos. Arousa is the most developed
both in terms of farming areas and number of nurseries [11],
and consequently, regarding quantity produced and turnover as
shown in the latest statistics [14]. Fig. 1 shows the geographical
location of these floating raft-farmed mussel estuaries.
Currently, there are one hundred and ninety-six installations
dedicated to the manufacturing and canning of seafood products in
Galicia that represent around 25% of the total in Spain [15].
However, with respect to their production figures only seven,
dedicated to the fish and shellfish canning, are affected by the IPPC
in this region according to the latest inventories [16]. More than
half, 120,000 t, of the mussels collected are processed, the rest is
consumed fresh [14] (Table 1).
