5. Discussion
Impacts of nitrogen on crop growth and yield are usually quantified
based on mechanistic photosynthetic driven crop growth
models that simulate dry matter production and predict yield in
term of harvested organ dry weight. We proposed a simple photothermal
based model to predict fruit morphogenesis growth and
yield, rather than incorporated nitrogen into a mechanistic photosynthetic
driven crop growth model because the relationship
between growth in fresh matter and dry mater that determines
DMC, and the mechanism on how nitrogen affects dry matter
partitioning are still poorly understood. Our model can predict individual
fruit growth processes and yield (fruit fresh weight per plant)
of greenhouse cucumber grown under different nitrogen supply
conditions. Although empirical, variables and parameters in our
models have clear biological meanings and are easily obtained.
Harvest date of individual fruit can be determined by its length
because there are limits to the extent of varying the harvest size
(Marcelis, 1994). Marcelis and Gijzen (1998) proposed an approach
to estimate harvest date of individual cucumber fruit. Their model,
however, does not take into account the impact of nitrogen on harvest
