The state flag is a field of white which centrally depicts a coat of arms. The state coat of arms consists of a blue shield, displaying a Native American, holding a bow and arrow; the arrow points down symbolizing peace. The upper left corner of the shield contains a white star, representing Massachusetts. Above the shield is the military crest, signifying the victory of liberty that was won through the battles of revolutionary war. Below the shield is a blue ribbon which displays the motto "Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem" (By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty)
