Most women were not making informed choices about their fertility and sexual health. Nearly all of those who came
to a facility had already decided to go ahead with sterilization.
This is because at the community level, ASHA workers mobilize women for family planning. They give basic information about various methods and motivate the women to go to the facilities for further guidance. However the facilities lack the mechanisms to provide the information and counseling needed to make an informed choice.
Many therefore choose a method based on their interaction with the ASHA
workers who may not be equipped to help them make the best choice.
