This annual festival usually begins on the 10th waxing day of the month of TAZAUNG MON (equivalent to OCTOBER/NOVEMBER) and comes to an end on the 2nd waning day of TAZAUNG MON. The festival represents the offering of lights to Lord Buddha at the abode of TAVATIMSA (The second highest level of the 31 existences) by means of launching fire balloons.
This month also highlights the KATHINA procession which is the donation of offertories beautifully set on treelike tri-pods and sent to the monasteries, in a delightful, pomp and lively procession. This annual event is carried out through out the country and usually before the full moon day of TAZAUNG MON. The collective procession in TAUNGGYI takes place on the eve day of full moon day of TAZAUNG MON starting at 9:00h in the morning and carrying on until 3:00h in the evening, cheered by thousands of on lookers living in the city’s main streets.
The most important highlight of this festival in TAUNGGYI is the fire balloon contest usually held for five days. The fire balloons are really unique and confined to this region only. There are different type of balloons; some with fireworks, others with lanterns. Beside this night time balloons, there are other types of balloons raised during the day time. Those are made into animal figures from thin glossy color paper but much smaller in size.
On the day of launching, the balloons are carried through the city streets to the launching ground at the foot a hill, near the SU HLAR MUNI pagoda. The convoy includes people representing certain neighborhoods. (Each balloon represents one neighborhood of the city). People in the convoy are entertainingly dancing, shouting, boozing and playing music along way.
The winner in the contest is judged according to three cr by the panel of five to ten people.
(a) the height the balloon can ascend
(b) the most beautiful display of fireworks
(c) the fastest to launch the balloon in accordance with the team work.
Another highlight which is also unique and worthwhile to watch and see is the “lantern procession”. The team comprising hundreds of people from each living quarter of the town takes part in this very colorful and delightful event. Every year it is celebrated on the eve of full moon day soon after the night falls. The people wear their traditional ethnic minority dresses or the outfit of older days, each of them holding a paper lantern and heading toward the SULAMUNI pagoda in a long procession. Music troupes, dancers of various races including Naga or other mythical animals follow the procession to make it more lively and impressive.
Itinerary is subject to changes depending on flights, road conditions and availability of rooms. A supplement for changes might apply.
