Developing Counselling Skills in Clinical Practice
Aims of the module
The aim of this module is to enable participants to reflect on the therapeutic use of interpersonal skills and develop these in the context of their professional practice.
This module is designed for individuals who participate in counselling within their working environment. Throughout the course, a positive attitude towards psychological independence will be emphasised and encouraged. For this to be achieved the participant will be given opportunities to review the literature identifying research-based counselling intervention skills and strategies. This module therefore seeks to deepen the level of understanding of complex multi-dimensional topics within the counselling process.
Teaching and Learning
A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be used and will include:
Formative assessment
You will be required to keep a reflective journal. This will be a personal document and it will be the student’s choice whether to submit/use it to inform developmental discussions. Clinical learning outcomes will be assessed by a mentor.
Summative assessments
By week four the student will produce a 500 word supportive narrative detailing how they intend to achieve the theoretical and clinical learning outcomes. A video role play will be assessed by a teacher and you will be required to produce a 3000 word assignment that will reflect on the issues surrounding the therapeutic use of interpersonal skills used with a client in your practice.
