Coconut trees are currently grown in more than 98 countries worldwide over an estimated area of 12 million hectares. In 2013, coconuts ranked the seventh widest oil crop cultivated worldwide. The exact origin of coconuts is still unknown. Coconut palms show versatility in its uses with almost every part of the palm exploitable. Worldwide, coconuts are mostly cultivated by smallholders using a variety of systems – the most common being the integrated farming with other crops and animals. Monocrop cultivation of coconuts is slowly gaining popularity with increased profitability. Major steps involved in coconut cultivation as a monocrop is described in brief. Coconut production averaged at 62.45 million tonnes worldwide in 2013 with Indonesia, Philippines, and India being the largest contributors. In terms of productivity, world averages were 5.17 tonnes coconut per hectare with Brazil being the most productive at 11.22 tonnes per hectare in 2013.
