Similar results have been reported by Beccali [6] and Zorafakis [7]. A research work carried out in Malta in 2010
among a sample of hotels has also shown similar trends [8]. The Eco certification programme of the Malta Tourism
Authority requires hotels to reduce their energy bill by 15-35%, water consumption by 15-45% and waste by 50%
[9]. Hence, it becomes clear that energy consumption in hotels should be reduced where it matters most. The
distribution of Fig. 1 gives an indication on the priorities in this sector. Moreover, the use of simulation software
such as DesignBuilder enables a more quantitative analysis of the positive effects of certain energy efficient
measures on the building under consideration and their prioritisation.
