Monitoring tube position
at the nose
All nasogastric tubes have measurement markers throughout
their length. Some patients may use this as their main means
of monitoring tube position. To make monitoring easier
it may be helpful to enhance the tube measurements by
marking the tube with a biro at the nose. However using
measurement markers or pen marks as a continuing means
of checking nasogastric tube movement at home should only
be used following initial confirmation of gastric placement
by pH of gastric aspirate or x-ray (NICE, 2006).
