Jakarta has awarded Sumitomo Corp and Nippon Sharyo a ¥13bn contract for the supply of 16 six-car trainsets for the first line of the Jakarta metro.
The trainsets will be designed according to the Standard Urban Railway System for Asia specification. This was developed by Japanese railway companies with the government to promote the export of rolling stock to other Asian markets. Each train is to have capacity for 1 950 passengers.
The contract length is 185 weeks. Sumitomo and Nippon Sharyo have established a railway engineering firm in Indonesia with a local partner.
This is the seventh works package to be awarded for the 15·7 km line. Three underground and three elevated civil works contracts were awarded in 2013; the final contract, for E&M systems, is due to be awarded in late March or April.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the north-south line was held in October 2013. The first stage will connect Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta to Hotel Indonesia traffic circle with 13 stations. Design capacity is around 173 000 passengers/day. Revenue service is planned to start in early 2018.
