Since accumulation of substances as a function of reduced water refreshment is a challenge in RAS , application of membrane filtration technology for more advanced and efficient removal of fine suspended solids and colloids is a treatment strategy that may be one way to solve this problem. However, membrane filtration in RAS maybe a challenge due to the potential of increased membrane fouling caused by the accumulation of colloidal particles on the surface of or within the membrane which will decrease the filtration flux over time. Membrane fouling and clogging can be controlled by operation below critical flux, periodic back flushing / back washing and relaxation techniques, and air-scouring
