In contrast, Nile tilapia
are known to filter 1 Am bacteria and phytoplankton as small as 5 Am diameter
(Popma, 1982; Beveridge et al., 1991). In a comparative pond-culture study of these
two species, water samples from ponds stocked with silver carp contained significantly
fewer large phytoplankton, but more of the smaller phytoplankton genera ( < 20 Am)
than in those samples from Nile tilapia stocked ponds
