Cytotoxicity towards KB cells
C. K. Angerhofer (Department of Medicinal Chemistry and
Pharmacognosy, University of Illinois at Chicago) provided
cytotoxicity data as previously described (Likhitwitayawuid
et al. 1993). Samples with an IC50 "20 lg ml−" were
regarded as non-toxic.
Antimalarial activity
N. Lang-Unnasch (Division of Geographic Medicine, University
of Alabama at Birmingham) determined the activity
of pycnidione according to Angerhofer et al. (1992).
Thin layer chromatography (TLC)
Twenty ll of each fungal extract were applied to a silica gel
60 F#&% TLC plate (Merck) and developed with dichloromethane
containing 2% (v}v) methanol (MeOH). The
chromatograms were detected under uv-light (254 and
366 nm) followed by treatment with vanillin-H#SO% reagent
(1 g vanillin dissolved in 100 ml H#SO%, heated at 100°) to
visualize most of the organic compounds.
Culture and extraction of fungi for chemical
investigations
Nine fungal strains were chosen for chemical investigations on
